Why local conditions change the specification

The same roof built to the same standard performs differently in each of these places, and the differences are worth understanding before you choose a material.

• On the coast — Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville — salt attacks fasteners, flashing and edge metal before it touches the roof surface. Coastal roofs tend to fail at their metal details rather than in the field, so the specification of those components matters more than the shingle above them. Sustained humidity also feeds the algae behind dark roof streaking, which makes algae-resistant products worth having.
• In the hail corridors — Denver, Parker, Oklahoma City and Springfield — impact resistance governs everything.
