What Florida heat and humidity do to a roof

Jacksonville is the hardest ultraviolet environment of any market we work in, and heat is the reason roofs here reach the end of their service life sooner than identical roofs installed further north. Four forces are at work.

• Ultraviolet load. Long, intense summers break down asphalt from the surface down. Shingles lose flexibility, granules shed, and rubber components such as pipe boots reach the cracking stage at the early end of their expected range rather than the late end.

Atlantic hurricane season runs from the start of June to the end of November. Jacksonville has been comparatively fortunate on direct landfalls, and that is exactly what makes the risk easy to underestimate: most of the damage that reaches roofs here comes from systems tracking offshore or crossing the peninsula, delivering hours of sustained wind and driving rain.

Wind-driven rain gets pushed sideways and uphill beneath shingles in a way ordinary rain never does.
