What unpredictable North Carolina weather actually does to a roof

Raleigh sits far enough inland to avoid the worst of the coast and far enough south to avoid a real northern winter, which means roofs here get a bit of everything and nothing consistently. Four forces do most of the damage.

• Tree fall and debris. Raleigh is the City of Oaks and it shows in our repair logs. Limbs come down in summer thunderstorms and ice events, leaf litter fills valleys and gutters, pine pollen coats everything in spring, and heavy shade keeps sections of roof permanently damp so moss takes hold. Under mature canopy this is the single biggest factor in how long a roof lasts here.
• Summer thunderstorms and hail. The Triangle gets genuine hail, and the damage that matters is often invisible from the ground. Hail bruises the mat beneath the granule surface without cracking anything visible, and the bruise becomes a crack months later under normal thermal cycling.
• Winter ice rather than snow. Raleigh’s winter risk is freezing rain and ice loading, not snowfall. Ice weighs down limbs until they fail, and repeated freeze-thaw cycling works water into small openings in flashing and widens them.
• Tropical remnants. Systems that made landfall on the coast arrive here as sustained wind and heavy rain. Less dramatic than the coast, but wind-driven rain gets pushed uphill under shingles all the same.
